How Not to Sew a Y-Seam

I finally decided to join the Marcelle Medallion Quilt bandwagon.
I got  Alexia Marcelle Abegg's book Liberty Love at Quiltcon
and was lucky enough to get tho meet her and have you sign the book as well.
After seeing a ton of variations of this quilt in the blog-o-sphere
I decided it would be my first project to do from the book.
I started by pulling the fabrics i wanted to use just for the center block...
I'll figure out the rest as i go along.

Liberty Love

All was going well...
until i got to the first Y-Seam.
I've never done one before.

Can you tell?
I don't think this is the way it's suppose to look.

and to make matters worse it turns out i pieced some of it wrong too...

Those edges are suppose to be square.  Oops!

After several seam ripping sessions and resewing to still get a bad result
i have put it aside for now.
I think i need to practice on some easier block with Y-seams first.

Have you tried this block?  Any tips for a Y-Seam newbie?

  1. This is next on my agenda. So once you get past the medallion it's supposed to get easier, right? I really like your fabric choices. I'm going out on a limb and doing mine in solids. Which may or may not be a good idea...

  2. It's gonna be a cute quilt, good luck with the seam. When I do those I start from the inside corner and sew out to the edge instead of stopping, needle down, then pivoting. It works better for me. My needle down often gets caught in the feed dogs. I hope this helps! :)

  3. I have not attempted a Y seam yet. They scare me almost as much as curved blocks do. Good luck with the quilt - just keep telling yourself it will be worth it in the end.

  4. how frustrating! I have no tips for you, I'm terrible at Y seams myself. Your fabrics look wonderful in the block- good luck!!

  5. I have not attempted this seam yet either, but you make me want to try. I understand setting it aside. But you get back up on that horse soon!

  6. I just ordered the book today - and I saw the thing with the Y seams too - I googled "Y Seams Tutorial" and I got a post from Fresh Lemons - http://www.freshlemonsquilts.com/?p=1373. Haven't tried it yet but hope this helps. I'll be right there with you soon!!

  7. Like the above commenter, I used the tutorial from Fresh Lemons to learn how to do a Y-seam. But my Y-seam was a lot bigger and it wasn't part of a block. Good luck!
